Football Recap: Chris Bennett Key Part of Team Effort in Wildcats Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Legend, Fruita Monument was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They took down the Grand Junction Central Warriors 39-20. The Wildcats haven't had any issues with the Warriors recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive victory against them.

Fruita Monument's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Chris Bennett led the charge by rushing for 112 yards and a pair of scores on only 14 carries. The dominant performance also gave Bennett a new career-high in rushing touchdowns (two). Cooper Rowell was another key player, rushing for 77 yards and one TD on only ten carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Fruita Monument was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 308 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Grand Junction Central only rushed for 101 rushing yards.

Another reason for the win was Fruita Monument's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Corbyn Davis, Blake Bovee, and Nate Wilkinson, who each picked up one sack apiece. Fruita Monument got some further help from Davis: he picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made eight total tackles.

The win got Fruita Monument back to even at 1-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Fruita Monument will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Chaparral at 7:00 p.m. on the 12th. As for Grand Junction Central, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Grand Junction at 7:00 p.m.
