Preview: Woodland Regional Hawks vs. Wilby Wildcats

Woodland Regional is 1-8 against Wilby since December of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Woodland Regional Hawks will head out on the road to face off against the Wilby Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the pair posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Last Tuesday, Woodland Regional didn't have too much trouble with Derby at home as they won 65-46. The win was just what Woodland Regional needed coming off of a 113-59 loss in their prior matchup.

Woodland Regional can attribute much of their success to James Scampolino, who scored 17 points along with two steals, and Dean Accetura, who scored 27 points. Scampolino has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of John Napiello, who scored 13 points.

Meanwhile, Wilby can now show off seven landslide victories after their most recent matchup on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Watertown with a sharp 70-50 win. Given Wilby's advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut basketball rankings (they are ranked 46th, while Watertown is ranked 153rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Woodland Regional pushed their record up to 7-10 with that win, which was their third straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.3 points per game. As for Wilby, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-4.

Woodland Regional was taken down by Wilby 108-63 when the teams last played back in December of 2023. Can Woodland Regional avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
