Baseball Recap: Shawe Memorial Hilltoppers vs. South Decatur Cougars
Shawe Memorial won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Wednesday. They wound up on the wrong side of a tough 10-3 walloping at the hands of the South Decatur Cougars. Shawe Memorial was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as South Decatur apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.
Zach Gish made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
On South Decatur's side, JP Scudder was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. Scudder was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Colby Rathburn was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing four bases while going 2-for-3. Brock Lane was another key contributor, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double.
Shawe Memorial now has a losing record at 2-3. As for South Decatur, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 4-3.
Shawe Memorial will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Henryville at 5:30 p.m. Henryville will be hoping to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last. As for South Decatur, they will head out on the road to square off against Southwestern at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
