Softball Recap: Rancho Verde Takes a Loss

Rancho Verde had lost five straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped down to 4-12 to make it six. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Colton Yellowjackets. The Mustangs were not able to make up for their loss to the Yellowjackets from their previous meeting back in March of 2016.

Isabelle Sena spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on four hits.

At the plate, Rancho Verde saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gabby Silvas, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

As for Colton, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 18-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.5 runs over those games.

On Colton's side, ANDREA VARELA made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. VARELA has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on SADIE RODRIGUEZ, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and five RBI. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high.

Coming up, Rancho Verde will face off against Hemet at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bulldogs' pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so the Mustangs' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Colton, they will take on Arroyo Valley at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Hawks have averaged an impressive 7.4 runs per game this season.
