Baseball Recap: Massac County Takes a Loss

Massac County extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 13-5 in the process. They fell 6-1 to the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats. The Patriots were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Massac County saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Wyatt Jeffords, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

As for Anna-Jonesboro, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-10. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games.

On Anna-Jonesboro's side, Lucas Salazar was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over 6.1 innings pitched. Salazar also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Anna-Jonesboro is 3-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 6-9 otherwise. Salazar was also big at the plate, earning two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Noah Chotner was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Luke Vaughn, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Massac County will square off against Goreville at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Anna-Jonesboro, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against DuQuoin at 4:30 p.m. The Indians' pitching crew has only allowed 4.1 runs per game this season, so the Wildcats' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
