Basketball Recap: Sandia Starts Season with Defeat on the Road

Sandia had to start their season on the road on Saturday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They took a 49-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Hobbs Eagles. The Matadors were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in March.

Mikayla Hogan and Kaiyah Benally certainly did their best on Saturday to avoid the loss. Hogan dropped a double-double with ten points and 15 rebounds, while Benally posted ten points along with eight boards and five assists. Benally has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Naomi Randall, who had six points.

Coming up, Sandia will be playing at home against Cibola at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Hobbs, they are packing up and heading out on the road for their first away game of the season: they will take on Mayfield at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
