Football Recap: Calhoun County Cougars vs. Greenville Patriots

Calhoun County unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They took a 21-14 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Greenville Patriots on Friday. The Cougars lost against the Patriots in their previous head to head back in August of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 41-6 score last time.

Omorion Guilford threw for 54 yards and one touchdown. Quintrez Richardson was his top target, picking up 30 receiving yards. On the ground, Quinton Edwards rushed for 61 yards on only eight carries.

Leading Greenville to victory were Marquel Deering and Zayden Kelley. Deering rushed for 98 yards on only 13 carries, while Kelley rushed for 70 yards. Deering also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, picking up a sack and making ten total tackles (2.0 for loss). Greenville also got help from Jamere Smith, who showed off his sure hands for 97 receiving yards.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Calhoun County will face off against Terrell County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Greenville, they will challenge Columbus at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
