Basketball Recap: Hamilton's Losing Streak Snapped at Five Games

Hamilton had lost five straight headed into Monday's match, but Michael Gooden didn't let it get to six. The Hamilton Yankees sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 65-62 victory over the Hoover Cardinals on Monday thanks in part to Gooden, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 24 rebounds. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 8.1 boards per game.

Vernell Thompson was another key player, putting up nine points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. That's the most steals he has posted since back in November of 2024.

Hamilton's win bumped their record up to 8-11. As for Hoover, they have also traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season.

Hamilton and Hoover could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Hamilton will take on Fairfax at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday down 393 places (700 vs. 307). Hamilton is no doubt hoping to put an end to a nine-game streak of away losses dating back to last season. Meanwhile, Hoover (ranked 570th) will meet Christian (ranked 212th) at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
