Basketball Recap: Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Mustangs vs. Elm Creek Buffaloes
The Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Mustangs came tearing into Thursday's game with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.4 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Elm Creek by a score of 54-42. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Sumner-Eddyville-Miller also won the last time the pair played back in December of 2023.
Leading Sumner-Eddyville-Miller to victory were Taryn Arbuthnot and Mikah O'Neill. Arbuthnot scored 18 points along with eight rebounds and four steals, while O'Neill dropped a double-double on 20 points and 17 rebounds. Arbuthnot hasn't dropped below two steals for 11 straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Cayleigh Jackson, who scored four points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Despite the defeat, Elm Creek saw an underclassman step up: Kendal Cavenee scored 23 points along with two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Cavenee has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Ashley Bauer, who scored six points.
Sumner-Eddyville-Miller's victory bumped their record up to 17-1. As for Elm Creek, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-5.
Sumner-Eddyville-Miller will face off against the Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Overton is looking to tack on another W to their eight-game streak on the road. As for Elm Creek, they will square off against the Falcons at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Wilcox-Hildreth focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Thursday.
