Softball Recap: Independence Wins Going Away Against Mallard Creek

Independence won the last time they faced Mallard Creek and things went their way on Monday too. The Independence Patriots blew past the Mallard Creek Mavericks 20-4. The result was nothing new for the Patriots, who have now won three matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.

Maliyah Alexander made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Independence got a massive performance out of Sydnee Platt, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and three runs. The dominant performance gave Platt a new career-high in runs. Another player making a difference was Sofia Tristan, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run and three runs.

Independence always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mallard Creek only posted an OBP of .348.

The win made it two in a row for Independence and bumps their season record up to 3-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mallard Creek, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-3.

Coming up, Independence will be playing in front of their home fans against Hough at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Independence's pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so Hough's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Mallard Creek, they will head out to take on South Mecklenburg at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
