Southern gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Monday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Chaney Cowboys and snuck past 6-5. That's more bragging rights for Southern, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Mason Pitts made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out 16 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off four hits (and only one walk). Pitts was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3.

Pitts wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Brody Brown, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southern will take on Chaney at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Chaney, they will head out on the road to square off against Western Reserve at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Chaney is no doubt hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
