The Canyon Comanches will square off against the El Modena Vanguards at 6:15 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Canyon 3.4, El Modena 3.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Canyon is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering San Dimas just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Saturday. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Saints.
Gilbert Vargas was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Canyon saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Blake Lau, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, El Modena gave up the first runs on Saturday, but they didn't let that get them down. They blew past La Serna 11-2. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Vanguards as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Cash Ferinac looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Logan Honikel, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Adrian Perez was another key player, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and one stolen base.
El Modena was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Canyon's defeat dropped their record down to 9-5. As for El Modena, their victory bumped their record up to 3-10.
Canyon came out on top in a nail-biter against El Modena in their previous meeting on Tuesday, sneaking past 5-4. Will Canyon repeat their success, or does El Modena has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
