Baseball Recap: Make It Three in a Row for Lowell

Lowell entered their tilt with Merrillville on Friday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 15-4 margin over the Pirates. The Red Devils have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Pirates, too.

Zak Scharnke made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2025. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Ryan Wellwerts and Hudson Van Deursen did most of the damage at the plate: Wellwerts went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles, while Van Deursen went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those three RBI gave Van Deursen a new career-high. Gavin Gutierrez was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Lowell kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive games.

Lowell's record now sits at 5-2. As for Merrillville, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-5.

Lowell has already played their next matchup (against Boone Grove), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Merrillville, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 16-4 defeat against Portage on the 14th.
