Basketball Recap: Freeport Comes Up Short + How To Watch

Freeport fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Jefferson on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the J-Hawks by a score of 63-60. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Pretzels came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 67th, while the J-Hawks are ranked 353rd).

Layni Marchini was her usual excellent self, putting up 29 points for Jefferson. Marchini has become a key player for the J-Hawks: the team is 3-1 when she posts at least 20 points, but 8-14 otherwise. Abbie Bracius was another key player, scoring 11 points.

Freeport has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 20-7 record this season. As for Jefferson, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-15.

Looking ahead, Freeport won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Hononegah at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Jefferson, they and Rockford East will face off at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday without much rest, having both just played.
