Baseball Game Preview: Gloucester County Christian Conquerors vs. Atlantic Christian Cougars

The Gloucester County Christian Conquerors will venture away from home to challenge the Atlantic Christian Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Gloucester County Christian and Atlantic Christian meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on May 6th. The Conquerors fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 5-4.

For Atlantic Christian's part, Luke Odell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on four hits. Odell has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Seth Phillips, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Atlantic Christian's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-4 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was James Papanikolaou, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Atlantic Christian kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 8-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Gloucester County Christian's defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 7-5. As for Atlantic Christian, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-5.

Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Gloucester County Christian hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .371. However, it's not like Atlantic Christian struggles in that department as they've averaged .382. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
