Baseball Recap: Plainfield Quakers vs. Whiteland Warriors
It was a good run, but Plainfield unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 9-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Whiteland Warriors. Plainfield was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Whiteland apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played last Tuesday.
Plainfield got a good showing from Luke Warriner, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
On the hitting side, Clark Laker made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-1 with a home run and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Grady Broughton, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Even though they lost, Plainfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
On Whiteland's side, Drew Helton made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. Helton was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, Maalik Perkins was incredible, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Isaac Phegley, who scored two runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Having lost for the first time this season, Plainfield fell to 4-1. As for Whiteland, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.
Plainfield will head out on the road to challenge Martinsville at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Martinsville has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed seven runs per game on average), something Plainfield will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Whiteland, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Tri-West Hendricks at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Whiteland has given up an average of 6.2 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
