Flag Football Recap: Mountain Pointe Piles Up the Points Against Maricopa

Mountain Pointe won the last time they faced Maricopa and things went their way on Thursday too. The Pride took their game with ease, bagging a 28-0 win over the Rams. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Pride just coasted through the last quarter.

A big part of Mountain Pointe's victory came down to the chemistry between Ariana Acosta and her top target Amillia Mambru. Acosta threw for 176 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Mambru picked up 105 receiving yards and two TDs. An impressive showing, but Mambru really ramped things up playing D: she made seven total tackles and defended two passes in addition to snagging two interceptions.

Mountain Pointe didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Maricopa to a completion percentage of just 46.9%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from two players: Royal Walker and Mambru, who each logged two passes deflected. They're 1-3 when they limit the passing game like that.

Mountain Pointe didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. Mambru led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by herself. Walker got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Mountain Pointe's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 6-6. As for Maricopa, their loss was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-10.

Looking ahead, Mountain Pointe will venture away from home to take on Arizona College Prep at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Pride 14.1, the Knights 13.9) so any points scored will be well earned. Maricopa does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
