Baseball Game Preview: Red Mountain Mountain Lions vs. Corona del Sol Aztecs

The Red Mountain Mountain Lions will face off against the Corona del Sol Aztecs on Saturday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Red Mountain comes in on five and Corona del Sol on seven.

Red Mountain is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They won by a run and slipped past Brophy College Prep 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mountain Lions have posted since March 20th.

Drew Hanen looked comfortable as he tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Red Mountain's win was truly a team effort as seven different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Kale Thorson, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Corona del Sol faced O'Connor in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Aztecs' pitchers stepped up to hand the Eagles a 10-0 shutout. Considering the Aztecs have won 13 contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Red Mountain pushed their record up to 23-5 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Corona del Sol, their victory bumped their record up to 23-5.

Red Mountain took their win against Corona del Sol in their previous meeting back in February of 2024 by a conclusive 7-1 score. Will the Mountain Lions repeat their success, or do the Aztecs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
