Basketball Recap: Mountain Heritage Piles Up the Points Against Owen

A well-balanced attack led Mountain Heritage over Owen in every quarter on their way to victory on Tuesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Mountain Heritage Cougars blew the Owen Warhorses out of the water with a 49-10 final score. The Cougars have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine matches by 23 points or more this season.

Mountain Heritage's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lilly Neill, who posted ten points in addition to eight steals and five assists. Neill is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last nine games she's played. Layla Worley was another key player, putting up 11 points and seven steals.

Despite the defeat, Owen saw an underclassman step up: freshman Katie Knighton put up three points and three steals. Those three points gave Knighton a new career-high.

Mountain Heritage is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-3 record this season. As for Owen, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-16.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Avery County the next time they take the court. Owen will host Avery County at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while Mountain Heritage will head out to face them at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
