Baseball Recap: Berne-Knox-Westerlo Comes Up Short

Berne-Knox-Westerlo made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Middleburgh, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Bulldogs fell just short of the Knights by a score of 5-3 on Friday. Surprisingly, this marked the Bulldogs' sixth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Ryan Heath put in work no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Heath was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. He has become a key player for Berne-Knox-Westerlo: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 2-6-1 otherwise.

Heath wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Merrick Damin, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo's defeat dropped their record down to 4-7-1. As for Middleburgh, their record now sits at 7-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Berne-Knox-Westerlo will face off against Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Bulldogs are facing the Wolves at the right time seeing as the Wolves are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Middleburgh, they are taking a road trip to face off against Mayfield at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Knights will also cruise into their next game with the timing on their side: the Panthers will have lost three straight heading into Monday's contest.
