Basketball Recap: Juan Espinoza and Josiah Rodriguez Secure Win for Union Colony Prep

After losing to Clear Creek the last time they met, Union Colony Prep decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Union Colony Prep Timberwolves enjoyed a cozy 71-57 win over the Clear Creek Golddiggers on Thursday. While the Timberwolves didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Leading Union Colony Prep to victory were Josiah Rodriguez and Juan Espinoza. Rodriguez dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds, while Espinoza went 6 of 7 from beyond the arc on his way to 19 points. The dominant performance also gave Espinoza a new career-high in rebounds (three). Pablo Mendoza-Munoz was another key player, putting up eight points and five rebounds.

Union Colony Prep was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Clear Creek only racked up eight assists.

When it comes to explaining why Clear Creek lost, don't look at Zephyrus Schuessler. Despite the final result, he posted 38 points along with eight steals and six boards. Schuessler is becoming a predictor of Clear Creek's success: when he posts at least 20 points the team is 2-1 (and 0-4 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Blake Weichel, who had nine points.

Union Colony Prep's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-2. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.0 points per game. As for Clear Creek, their loss dropped their record down to 2-5.

Union Colony Prep will head out to face off against Flatirons Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Flatirons Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.8 points per game this season. As for Clear Creek, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 60-51 win against Denver Academy on the 11th.
