The Melrose-Mindoro Mustangs will head out on the road to challenge the Aquinas Blugolds at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Melrose-Mindoro is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season.
On Saturday, Melrose-Mindoro made easy work of Cashton and carried off an 8-2 win. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won three in a row.
Bella Rozek made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
Rozek wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Miranda Banse, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Kenna Prager also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Aquinas was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 5-2 to Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.
Ava Scholze was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run.
Aquinas' loss dropped their record down to 5-8. As for Melrose-Mindoro, their win bumped their record up to 12-3.
Aquinas' hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Melrose-Mindoro has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Aquinas, though, as they've been averaging only 4.1 strikeouts. Will Melrose-Mindoro keep running through batters, or will the Blugolds buck the trend?
Melrose-Mindoro was able to grind out a solid victory over Aquinas when the teams last played back in April of 2023, winning 10-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
