Basketball Recap: Brownell Talbot Comes Up Short

After a string of four wins, Brownell Talbot's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They were dealt a 62-26 defeat at the hands of the Fort Calhoun Pioneers. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Raiders have suffered against the Pioneers since December 29, 2016.

When it comes to explaining why Brownell Talbot lost, don't look at Abbi Gibbs. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 boards. Gibbs is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last 22 games she's played dating back to last season.

Even though they lost, Brownell Talbot smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in five consecutive matches.

Fort Calhoun found their leader in sophomore Raeann Massey, who went 10 for 18 en route to 21 points in addition to five boards and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Massey has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Maelie Nelson, who posted eight points and three steals.

Brownell Talbot's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-8. As for Fort Calhoun, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 11-3.

Brownell Talbot won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Parkview Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Brownell Talbot is facing Parkview Christian at the right time seeing as Parkview Christian is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Fort Calhoun, they will also get right back to it: they'll face off against Concordia at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Fort Calhoun has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games.
