Basketball Game Preview: Otay Ranch Mustangs vs. San Ysidro Cougars

The Otay Ranch Mustangs will face off against the San Ysidro Cougars at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Both have had a bumpy ride up to this point with three consecutive losses for Otay Ranch and seven for San Ysidro.

Otay Ranch is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 61 points on Friday, they were much more limited against Mission Hills on Saturday. They were dealt a 78-28 loss at the hands of the Grizzlies. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 786th, while the Grizzlies are ranked 163rd).

Despite the defeat, Otay Ranch had strong showings from Johann Omae, who went 5 of 12 on his way to 13 points, and Nyno Lopez, who posted five points.

Meanwhile, San Ysidro played a tough matchup on Wednesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 81-38 loss at the hands of Bonita Vista. The Cougars were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 45-20.

San Ysidro's loss dropped their record down to 2-19. As for Otay Ranch, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-15.

Otay Ranch was able to grind out a solid victory over San Ysidro when the teams last played back in January of 2024, winning 54-46. Does Otay Ranch have another victory up their sleeve, or will San Ysidro turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
