Baseball Recap: Surry County Has No Trouble Against Cumberland

The matchup between Surry County and Cumberland on Wednesday hardly resembled the 2-1 effort from their previous meeting. The Cougars blew past the Dukes 19-9. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won six matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.

Tanner Keckler made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 12 batters over 4.1 innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 5.3 strikeouts per game. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. Those doubles were his first of the season.

In other batting news, Surry County got a big performance out of Logan Livesay, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI Livesay has posted since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Dawson Keckler, who went 1-for-5 with four runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Surry County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.

Surry County pushed their record up to 6-1 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.0 runs over those games. As for Cumberland, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-8.

Looking ahead, Surry County will challenge Brunswick at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Cumberland, they will face off against Buckingham at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Knights will roll in looking for their eighth straight win, something the Dukes surely won't give up without a fight.
