Basketball Recap: Delta Comes Up Short

After flying high against Jay County last Thursday, Delta came back down to earth. The Delta Eagles were just a bucket shy of victory on Saturday and fell 55-54 to the Shelbyville Golden Bears. The defeat continues a trend for the Eagles in their matchups with the Golden Bears: they've now lost five in a row.

Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Griffyn Knight, who posted 24 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. Knight has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 20 times she's played. Jillian Barr was another key player, going 6 of 12 on her way to 16 points and six boards.

Hannah Baker had a dynamite game for Shelbyville, going 8 for 16 en route to 27 points. The dominant performance gave Baker a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayla Ash, who scored eight points and seven rebounds.

Delta's loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-5. As for Shelbyville, they pushed their record up to 12-9 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road.

Delta didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 54-38 defeat against Monroe Central on the 28th. Shelbyville has also already played their next game, a 74-13 loss against Pendleton Heights on the 28th.
