Pontotoc is returning to their home field after beating Itawamba Agricultural on theirs, despite the fact Itawamba Agricultural has dominated at home this season. Pontotoc came out on top against Itawamba Agricultural by a score of 9-5 on Saturday. That's two games straight that the Warriors have won by exactly four runs.
Mattie Sims Koon spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Kelsy Spears was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Madi Collums, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.
Pontotoc was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .486. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Itawamba Agricultural only posted a batting average of .231.
Meanwhile, Oxford came up short against St. Benedict at Auburndale on Friday, falling 10-2.
Oxford saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jayla Dukes, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Pontotoc has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.2 runs over those games. Oxford now has a losing record of 7-8.
Monday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Pontotoc hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. However, it's not like Oxford struggles in that department as they've averaged .381. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
