Overton and Kirby are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Wolverines will head out to face off against the Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Overton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.4 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Overton made easy work of Kingsbury and carried off a 15-4 win. The Wolverines might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matches by nine runs or more this season.
Daiquan Dixon was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Overton got a massive performance out of Marquel Brooks, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI Brooks has posted since back in March. Nehemiah Diggs was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-2.
Overton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .692. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Kingsbury only posted an OBP of .458.
Meanwhile, Kirby hadn't done well against Memphis Central recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Cougars narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Warriors 9-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Cougars have posted since March 19, 2024.
Elijah Cody was incredible, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Samuel Chavarria, who scored two runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Kirby pushed their record up to 6-6 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Overton, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-4-1 record this season.
Wednesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Overton has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .548. However, it's not like Kirby struggles in that department as they've averaged .622. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Overton suffered a grim 22-5 defeat to Kirby in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Wolverines avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
