Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Wellington walked away with it. They never let the Vero Beach Indians get on the board and left with a 13-0 victory on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Wolverines, who have now won nine contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Tori Payne was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Payne was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Kaylee Riles was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Erryn Lowe was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
The win (which was Wellington's sixth in a row) raised their record to 19-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for Vero Beach, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 13-12.
Coming up, Wellington will take on Centennial at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Wolverines 1.5, the Eagles 3) so any runs scored will be well earned. Vero Beach does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
