Muhammad takes over top spot in Class of 2012 Top 100

Las Vegas phenom Shabazz Muhammad is the new No. 1, but talented bigs Isaiah Austin, DaJuan Coleman and Andre Drummond will be in pursuit during July evaluation period.

New No. 1 Muhammad averaged 25.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game as a junior at Bishop Gorman.

In a year blessed with promising bigs, a perimeter player has ascended to the No. 1 spot in the MaxPreps Class of 2012 Top 100.

Shabazz Muhammad enters July's evaluation period with the target on his back. Expect former No. 1 Andre Drummond as well as Isaiah Austin and DaJuan Coleman to give the Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) star a push before the rankings are updated again in August.

CBSSports.com's Matt Norlander writes the pressure of holding the top spot isn't likely to faze Muhammad, who feels like he has plenty to prove in July. Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas, UCLA and hometown UNLV are the primary suitors for his services.

Muhammad averaged 25.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game as a junior at Bishop Gorman. He helped head coach Grant Rice's Gaels win a state title as a sophomore.

Drummond, Austin and Coleman maintain their spots in the top five, while 6-foot-10, 255-pound Mitch McGary of Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) joins 2012's elite following strong showings throughout the spring and early summer.

Plenty of recruiting drama lies ahead as just 36 of the Top 100 players have made a verbal commitment, including just three of the Top 20.
