Baseball Recap: Fitzgerald Takes a Loss

Fitzgerald lost against New Haven back in April, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Spartans lost 9-3 to the Rockets.

Leiland McCallep was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Fitzgerald is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 5-6 otherwise. McCallep was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.

McCallep wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Dylan Bush, who went 1-for-3 with one run. Dexter Garda also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Fitzgerald has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-7 record this season. As for New Haven, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-5.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Fitzgerald will host Clintondale at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Dragons have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.63 runs per game on average), something the Spartans will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for New Haven, they will welcome Clawson at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
