Baseball Game Preview: Hume-Fogg Blue Knights vs. Pearl-Cohn Firebirds

Hume-Fogg is 9-0-1 against Pearl-Cohn since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Blue Knights will be playing at home against the Firebirds at 4:30 p.m. Hume-Fogg is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.

Hume-Fogg came out on top against Maplewood on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run first inning. The Blue Knights blew past the Panthers 12-2. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Blue Knights.

The team relied heavily on Desmond Vecchio, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Samuel Powell, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

Hume-Fogg always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .688. They are a perfect 9-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Meanwhile, Pearl-Cohn was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 8-5 to Stratford, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. Firebirds fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Spartans since on Tuesday.

Pearl-Cohn's loss dropped their record down to 1-14. As for Hume-Fogg, their victory bumped their record up to 13-14.

Everything went Hume-Fogg's way against Pearl-Cohn in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, as Hume-Fogg made off with a 15-4 win. Will the Blue Knights repeat their success, or do the Firebirds have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
