Needing a win to stay in the playoff picture, Lawson shuts down Rams on the road.
An unexpected 28-0 loss to
Lexington during first round of Class 2, District 15 football action was upsetting to
Lawson's playoff hopes, forcing the Cardinals to regroup and focus solely on their next game.
It also brought out the ire of Todd Dunn’s squad.
"This week we got after it," Cardinal offensive lineman
Brady Moppin said while discussing the quandary he and his teammates found themselves in. "Between last week and this week we were (ticked) off. We were ready to come out…and whoever was next was going to feel it."
That shutout loss to the Minutemen and a loss to Hogan Prep last weekend would have nearly buried Lawson's shot at participating in the Missouri State Football Playoffs. But the 28-19 triumph over the Rams vaulted the Cardinals back into the race.

Lexington is the one team that controls its own destiny, while the Cardinals' and Hogan Prep's hopes will hinge on MSHSAA's tiebreaker system.
"This (win) was pretty big," Moppin said following the road win. "It's really sad because we lost and put ourselves in quite a predicament for going to the playoffs. This win kind of helps us out. This is a good win."
Lawson took the opening kickoff and moved out to midfield before Hogan Prep recovered a fumble and cashed it in for a 7-0 lead a few plays later. But Lawson scored the next three touchdowns, including
Garrison Green's 1-yard keeper that put the Cardinals on top for good at 13-7 with 1:21 remaining in the opening quarter.
"Fumbles are always demoralizing," Moppin said of Lawson's early-game gaffe. "But we pride ourselves in taking one bad thing and flushing it. Then we just gotta think of the next play."
With the win, the Cardinals (8-1) take over Hogan Prep's spot at No. 5 in the latest Class 2 rankings. The Rams, meanwhile, drop to eighth after losing just their second contest of the year.
MILLER PICKS JAYHAWKS AGAINAfter withdrawing his commitment to Kansas in mid-June,
Blue Springs running back
Darrian Miller has thrown his name into the Jayhawk hat one more time.
Earlier this week, following an official visit to the Big 12 North school over the weekend, Miller called Jayhawk coach Turner Gill and his lead recruiter Reggie Mitchell to deliver the news. Miller rushed for 2,798 yards and 37 touchdowns on 309 carries as a junior and has amassed over 1,800 yards in nine games so far in 2010.
STANDARD IS ST. LOUIS' BESTZach Kramer's 34-yard field goal with five seconds remaining in the game concluded a frenzied second half rally that saw
Chaminade (St. Louis) escape with a 26-24 win over second-ranked Parkway North after trailing 24-0 at intermission Friday.
On the brink of elimination from a postseason berth, the Red Devils relied on the legs of
Rob Standard to get back into the game. The senior responded by rushing for 256 yards in the second half, and scoring on runs of 42 and 54 yards in the third quarter to pull within 24-23 going into the final quarter.
In the process of extending Chaminade’s season at least one more game, Standard reestablished the St. Louis area’s rushing record of 7,109 yards set by former Timberland running back Montee Ball in 2008. Standard rushed for 356 yards for the game on 35 carries.
“I knew we were capable of coming back,” Standard told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We saved ourselves from elimination, I broke the record and we get to keep going.”
Standard, who needed 199 yards to get the record, was credited with 100 yards at halftime. The Iowa State recruit has 7,267 yards rushing for his career and 91 touchdowns. He has scored at least one touchdown in each of his last 33 games.
