After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Jackson, James Monroe was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They were the clear victors by a 17-9 margin over the Bluefield Beavers. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Mavericks' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.
Bryleigh Thomas was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over six innings while giving up five earned (and four unearned) runs off ten hits (and only one walk). Thomas was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, James Monroe got a massive performance out of Lizzy Smith, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. With the victory, James Monroe broke their six-game losing streak and moved their record to 6-12. As for Bluefield, they dropped their record down to 3-10 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home.
Looking ahead, James Monroe will host Greenbrier East at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Mavericks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Spartans have averaged an impressive 8.5 runs per game this season. As for Bluefield, they are taking a road trip to challenge Wyoming East at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
