Laurel Highlands recap September 10, 2013
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Greater Johnstown, who defeated 267th ranked Greater Johnstown, 35-14. Will Seymour threw for 40 yards and ran for 89 yards during the win.
Fans got a thrill when David Maruca and Brody Shuty connected against Somerset. The longest such play in Laurel Highlands this season, the connection resulted in 61 yards.
Westmont Hilltop's dynamic duo of Liam Moran and Colin Barron proved to be unstoppable against Cambria Heights, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Moran threw for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns and Barron had 104 yards receiving. Sam Curry helped Westmont Hilltop's passing attack out by catching 8 balls for 85 yards.
The Hilltoppers' dynamic duo of Moran and Barron proved tough for the Highlanders to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Tanner Solarczyk was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 14 carries, he ran for 153 yards as Richland lost to Cambria Heights. Matt Shaffer also contributed to the rushing game with 60 yards on the ground.
Moran put up the best numbers through the air as Pat Barron's team fell to Jarrod Lewis' team.
Nico Pecora was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Rams beat Bishop Guilfoyle. The 6-foot-1 senior.
Barron was the best wideout in the league this week as the Hilltoppers fell to the Highlanders.
Joe Donoughe provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Forest Hills bested Bishop McCort. He completed 12 passes for 201 yards and also ran for 41 yards. Donoughe's key target this week was Shareef Blough, who caught 4 passes for 83 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Shaffer and Solarczyk, Richland has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Shaffer is tops in the league in passing with 374 yards, while Solarczyk has rushed for 234 yards this season. Tops in the league in receving yards is Westmont Hilltop's Barron, with 191 yards on 11 catches.
Two of the top units in Laurel Highlands will face off this week when Brandon Bailey's team takes on Bedford. The Rams' offense has recorded 91 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while the Bison have permitted only 12 on the year.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Richland takes on Bedford. The Rams are in second place, while Kevin Steele's team is in fourth place.
Central Cambria scaled the state rankings by moving to 351 from 459 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Red Devils climbed the ranks as a result of besting the Trojans 35-14.
