Football Recap: Sangre de Cristo Takes a Loss

If Sangre de Cristo was riding high fresh off their 48-14 takedown of Walsenburg last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Thunderbirds were outmatched by the Fowler Grizzlies and fell 66-22. The defeat continues a trend for the Thunderbirds in their meetings with the Grizzlies: they've now lost three in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Sangre de Cristo lost on Friday, don't look at Kolby Shellabarger. Despite the final result, he rushed for 163 yards and a pair of TDs on only 11 carries, and also picked up 48 receiving yards. Deklin Beiriger helped out on the ground, rushing for 103 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Fowler was led to victory by Brock True and Bronson Damgaard. True rushed for 197 yards and three scores on only six carries, while Damgaard rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns on only 11 carries. Those 201 rushing yards gave Damgaard a new career-high. Daniel Adams was another key player, rushing for 66 yards and one TD.

Sangre de Cristo's loss dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Fowler, with the victory, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Sangre de Cristo will take on Hoehne at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Thunderbirds will be up against the Farmers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 39 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Fowler, they will face off against Custer County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bobcats' defense has only allowed 13.5 points per game this season, so the Grizzlies' offense will have their work cut out for them.
