Football Recap: Hughes Springs Takes a Loss

Hughes Springs lost against De Kalb back in September of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Mustangs lost 42-16 to the Bears. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 1001st, while the Bears are ranked 483rd).

Bryuan Gardner had a dynamite game For De Kalb., rushing for 93 yards and three TDs on only nine carries, while also picking up 92 receiving yards and one touchdown. Gardner was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 52 yards. Mason Salinas also deserves some recognition as he punched in his first rushing touchdown of the season.

This is the second loss in a row for Hughes Springs and nudges their season record down to 2-3. As for De Kalb, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-2.

Looking ahead, Hughes Springs is taking a road trip to face off against Queen City at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs will be up against the Bulldogs' rather soft defense (which has allowed 45.4 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for De Kalb, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Daingerfield at 7:30 p.m.
