Basketball Recap: Desoto County Skates Past Island Coast with Ease

It's playoff time, and DeSoto County had no trouble coming through when it counted. They simply couldn't be stopped on Thursday as they easily beat the Island Coast Gators 69-23. The Bulldogs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight contests by 23 points or more this season.

DeSoto County found their leader in sophomore Cherish Wiggins, who almost dropped a double-double on 28 points and nine assists. Wiggins also set a new season-high mark in field goal percentage with 65%. Yahri Tyler was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.

DeSoto County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in eight consecutive games.

Despite the loss, Island Coast had strong showings from Nevaeh Janet-Lynn Howard, who posted ten points, and Samarrah Desir, who scored eight points.

DeSoto County is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.2 points over those games. As for Island Coast, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-18.

DeSoto County has already played their next contest (against Lemon Bay), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Island Coast does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
