Basketball Recap: Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Comes Up Short

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 52-46 heartbreaker at the hands of the Cortland Purple Tigers. While losing is never fun, the Red Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 581st, while the Purple Tigers are ranked 200th).

Jaxson Gambitta was nothing short of spectacular for Cortland: he went 6 for 9 on his way to 15 points and seven steals. Those seven steals gave Gambitta a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Owen Johnson, who posted nine points.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill's loss dropped their record down to 2-9. As for Cortland, their victory ended a nine-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 6-2.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill will venture away from home to face off against Central Valley Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Central Valley Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.6 points per game this season. As for Cortland, they will face off against OnTech at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Cortland also hasn't been messing around on offense: they've averaged 56.4 points per game.
