Baseball Recap: Maine East Comes Up Short

Maine East extended their losing streak to 15 on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 2-18 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Niles West Wolves. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Blue Demons have suffered against the Wolves since April 12, 2018.

Jackson Slamowitz was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Adolfo Lopez, who went 2-for-3 with one triple and two RBI.

As for Niles West, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 13-14. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted against Maine East since April 11, 2019.

On Niles West's side, they got a great performance from Shaylen Patel as he pitched six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. Patel has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Kevin Foley was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Eli Ordower, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Coming up, Maine East will venture away from home to square off against Niles North at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. As for Niles West, they will host Payton College Prep at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Wolves' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Grizzlies have averaged an impressive 6.6 runs per game this season.
