Basketball Recap: Martell Smith's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Miramar over Miami Country Day

If Miramar was feeling good fresh off their 62-40 takedown of Nova last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Miramar Patriots fell to the Miami Country Day Spartans 56-50. While losing is never fun, the Patriots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 174th, while the Spartans are ranked 31st).

Several Patriots players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Martell Smith, who posted 12 points. The dominant performance gave Smith a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Siah Blot, who had 12 points in addition to five boards and three steals.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Miami Country Day to victory, but perhaps none more so than Miguel Orbe, who went 5 of 12 on his way to 15 points and three steals. The match was Orbe's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Chaim Galbut, who put up 11 points and six rebounds.

Miramar has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-4 record this season. As for Miami Country Day, their win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-1.

Miramar will take on Hallandale at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Miami Country Day, they will square off against Norland at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
