Whitefish Bay prepares to host a special TOC 2017-18 ceremony where the boys soccer team will be nationally recognized by MaxPreps.
MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Whitefish Bay (Wis.) Blue Dukes have officially been named to the 13th Annual MaxPreps Soccer Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its seventh year honoring boys soccer.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for 100 of the top teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For soccer, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 34,000 competing varsity teams, this puts the Blue Dukes ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
In order to be eligible, the team not only had to be nationally ranked, but also had to win a state championship. Beating Oregon 6-1 in the
WIAAWI Division 2 state championship match on Friday, Nov. 3 marked the completion of an incredible 25-0 season — and earned Whitefish Bay an invitation to the Tour of Champions.
Matthew Comiskey scored off of an Evan Kortebein assist from 10 yards away just 30-seconds into the title match and then scored the championship-winning goal in the seventh minute on a free kick from 35 yards to give the Blue Dukes all of the offense they would need. However, Whitefish Bay wasn't finished.
Jimmy Zebell scored on a header in the 20th minute, Mario Carini put one in on a cross a couple of minutes later and Drew Nelson picked up a loose ball in the box to make the score 5-0. Jeremy Haddock scored the final Blue Duke goal in the 41st minute to put his team up 6-0. Oregon scored a goal in the 63rd minute to avoid the shutout. With the five-goal triumph Whitefish Bay scored its seventh boys state soccer title, and its third in a row.
The Blue Dukes began postseason play with a 14-1 regional blasting of Vincent before producing a 5-0 shutout of Oshkosh North a round later. Following wins of 3-0 and 4-0 over Cedarburg and Brookfield Central respectively, Whitefish Bay moved into Final Four competition where a 5-0 semifinal win over New Richmond set up the match with Oregon.
Rob Dubinski's club produced 17 shutouts during its 25-0 season, and gave up just 10 goals all season. In fact, the Blue Dukes knocked off Homestead 8-3 Sept. 19 in the only 2017 contest in which Whitefish Bay's competition scored more than one goal. Going back to 2016, the Blue Dukes' have won 31 straight matches.
Riding a streak of 40 matches without a loss set Whitefish Bay up for some rather high rankings at the conclusion of the 2017 season. The Blue Dukes reached the top of MaxPreps' computer rankings in
Wisconsin, and are the No. 3 squad
nationally.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes an invitation to the 13th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the boys soccer team, coaching staff, students and fans on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at approximately 7:15 p.m. in the gym at halftime of the boys basketball game.
