Recap: Maroa-Forsyth Trojans vs. Athens Warriors
The Maroa-Forsyth Trojans put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their undefeated season alive. They walked away with a 28-21 victory over Athens. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Maroa-Forsyth also won the last time the pair played back in October of 2022.
Kaiden Maurer continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 109 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries, while also throwing for 200 yards and two touchdowns on only 19 passes. Maurer was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 68 yards. Grant Smith did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 81 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Maroa-Forsyth's win was their seventh straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 9-0. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-8 Riverton and 1-7 PORTA/Ashland-Chandlerville Central/Greenview (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 42.7% over those games). As for Athens, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-2.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Maroa-Forsyth will take on Chicago Christian at 7:00 p.m. on October 28th. Chicago Christian will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings (they are ranked 237th, while Maroa-Forsyth is ranked 61st). As for Athens, they will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Southwestern at 1:00 p.m.
