Football Game Preview: Sumner Stingrays vs. Durant Cougars

The Sumner Stingrays will face off against the Durant Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (Sumner 13.5, Durant 10.7) so any points scored will be well earned.

Durant will be up against a hot Sumner squad: the team just extended their winning streak to four. The Stingrays came within six points of losing the streak, but they secured a 13-7 W against Armwood. The final result isn't all the surprising considering the Stingrays' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 75th, while the Hawks are ranked 206th).

The critical scores for Sumner came from Amari Luster and Nyla Gigger.

Sumner didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Luster and Alissa Freese. Ava Luke was another major factor on D, making eight total tackles (1.0 for loss) and defending two passes.

Meanwhile, Durant fell victim to George Jenkins and their airtight defense on Monday. They took a 13-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Eagles. The game was a 0-0 toss-up at halftime, but the Cougars couldn't quite close it out.

Sumner's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-4. The road wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 2.3 points on average over those games. As for Durant, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 7-5.

Sumner took their victory against Durant in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 24-0 score. Do the Stingrays have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
