Softball Game Preview: Edgewood Cougars vs. Franklin Wildcats

For the second straight game, Edgewood will face off against Franklin. The Cougars will venture away from home to square off against the Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Edgewood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.

Edgewood managed to slip by Franklin the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Cougars lost 11-5 to the Wildcats on Wednesday. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since April 30, 2025, but that streak is no more.

For Franklin's part, Shaylee Raby spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned runs on five hits and racked up 12 Ks. Raby has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Paisley Coffman, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Kydee Shults, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

Franklin is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 13-9 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.6 runs over those games. As for Edgewood, they dropped their record down to 9-9 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Edgewood has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Franklin struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
