Softball Recap: Maryvale Has No Trouble Against South Mountain

Maryvale's game last Thursday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 9-3 margin over the South Mountain Jaguars. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by six runs or more this season.

Isabel Hernandez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 17 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

In other batting news, Jaline Ortega and Marianna Jennings did most of the damage at the plate: Ortega went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs, while Jennings went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. That's the most doubles Jennings has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Ivette Hernandez Mojica, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Maryvale kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Maryvale's victory bumped their record up to 10-7. As for South Mountain, they dropped their record down to 7-13-1 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road.

Looking ahead, Maryvale will square off against Shadow Ridge at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The Panthers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Stallions have averaged an impressive 8.9 runs per game this season. South Mountain will be paying especially close attention to Maryvale's contest: after Maryvale faces off against Shadow Ridge, they'll take on South Mountain again at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
