The Desert Scorpions got the win against the Lee Vining Tigers on Saturday by a conclusive 16-6. The Scorpions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by ten runs or more this season.
Alayna Phillips made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off two hits. Phillips was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Desert got a massive performance out of Hayden Escobar, who scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Rachel Hewes, who scored two runs and stole five bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Desert pushed their record up to 7-3 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.3 runs over those games. As for Lee Vining, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-2.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Desert will challenge Boron at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Desert's pitchers better be ready for this one: Boron has averaged an impressive 9.9 runs per game this season.
