Basketball Game Preview: Laney Buccaneers vs. Green Level Gators

The Laney Buccaneers will square off against the Green Level Gators at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.

Last Friday, Laney came up short against Hoggard and fell 40-27. While losing is never fun, the Buccaneers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 121st, while the Vikings are ranked 14th).

Despite the defeat, Laney saw an underclassman step up: freshman India Williams to rack up 15 points along with six boards and three steals. That was a full 55.6% of Laney's points, marking the third time in a row Williams has posted more than a third of the team's points. Amiyah Lewis was another key player, putting up six points.

Meanwhile, Green Level was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Saturday as they fell 67-62 to Apex Friendship.

Laney will need to focus on slowing down Gwen Boles, one of several Green Level players who made an impact when they last played. She dropped a double-double with 21 points and ten rebounds. The dominant performance gave Boles a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Stella Eckhart, who on her way to 14 points in addition to six boards and five assists.

Laney's loss dropped their record down to 13-11. As for Green Level, they dropped their record down to 18-9 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Laney has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 21.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Green Level struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26.8 boards.
