Football Recap: Whitwell Tigers vs. Clay County Bulldogs
Whitwell and Clay County squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Whitwell had to settle for second. They took a 39-27 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Clay County Bulldogs. The Tigers lost against the Bulldogs in their previous head to head back in November of 2022, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 46-6 score last time.
Whitwell's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Bennett Mcdougal, who threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 85 yards. That's the most rushing yards Mcdougal has posted since back in September. Adam McDougal was another key pass catcher, picking up 146 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Clay County had a senior duo take command as Lance Burchette picked up 303 receiving yards and four touchdowns and Nate Adams threw for 471 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 16.8 yards per attempt. Those 471 passing yards set a new season-high mark for Adams. Nolan Adams also helped out as he racked up 131 receiving yards.
Whitwell's defeat dropped their record down to 8-4. As for Clay County, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-2.
Whitwell does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Clay County, they will face off against South Pittsburg on Friday. South Pittsburg will be hoping to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each matchup than the last.
