While Mathis didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with a 50-43 win over the Robstown Cottonpickers on Thursday. The 50-point effort marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring contest of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Despite the loss, Robstown saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Andre Hazel posted 17 points. That was a full 39.5% of the Cottonpickers' points, marking the seventh time in a row Hazel has had more than a third of the team's points.

Mathis' victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Robstown, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.

Mathis didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 55-46 win against John Paul II on the 4th. As for Robstown, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 72-30 defeat against Goliad on the 4th.
